The match being played over three rounds ensured that those of us who travelled from Sandwich on Friday evening were ensured an even greater soaking in Saturday. Rye was at its calmest but this ensured that the Sea Fret stayed with us all day.
Weather aside this is one of the blue ribbon fixtures which has been played over the past 96 years, with a few years missing from 1939-1945 due to the hostilities of the time.
The match finished on day one with Lloyd’s having secured victory by 6 1/2 to 1 1/2.
That evening our annual dinner was kindly hosted by Neil Pearce at his lovely house in Rye, and we offer our thanks to him for his generous hospitality, to Andrew Sturdy who supplies the Champagne as well as to the Bar GS for providing the wine.
Sunday saw a drier but windier day and the Bar showed great determination in their come back wining 3 matches to 1 but alas the Miles Illingworth Cup remains with Lloyd’s for another year.
