Last weekend, Elliott Meachem and Alex Lynch represented Lloyd’s Golf Club in the prestigious Alba Trophy which is a 36 hole scratch medal competition held at Woking G.C.. The Alba Trophy was Woking’s first open competition and has been running since the early 1940’s, attracting a top class field of amateur golfers. In 1987 it was decided to change the format to foursomes, but still 36 holes of scratch golf, with entries invited from the various clubs and societies who played regularly at Woking.
Being a scratch competition, play was from the back tees where Elliott and Alex faced some par 4s as long as 470 yards (and uphill). With the heather in full bloom and the pins placed in some very challenging positions, it was not going to be an easy day for anyone. After a morning round of 85, Lloyd’s resorted to Woking’s club claret for some inspiration and with a spring in their step managed to shoot 80 in the afternoon, finishing 19th out of a field of 32 teams. The winning team was the Old Bradfieldian G.S. with a score of 6 over par.
Congratulations to the winners and a big thank you to Woking Golf Club for hosting such a wonderful day.
